COMPUTER CURRICULUM

Course Description and Goals

The Computer courses for ELEMENTARY present the use of Information Technology as a tool for learning and productivity. The course is designed to equip students with the basic knowledge and skills related to the operation of the computer system that will enable them to efficiently access and organize information and present such body of information to others in an artistic and interesting manner.

 

At the end of the First Grade course, the students should be able to:

1. demonstrate an understanding of how the computer system functions i.e the input, processing and output devices.

2. observe etiquette in the use of computer.

3. demonstrate proper computer device operation

4. demonstrate proper placement of fingers while keyboarding particularly the home row keys

5. familiarize with the basic functions of a word processor using WORDPAD.

6. familiarize with the use of the operating system, i.e. Windows

7. create multimedia presentations using KIDPIX program

 

At the end of the Second Grade course, the students should be able to:

1. demonstrate an understanding of how the computer system functions i.e. hardware and software devices.

2. observe etiquette in the use of computer.

3. demonstrate proper computer device operation

4. demonstrate proper placement of fingers while keyboarding particularly the home row keys

5. use basic functions of the MS Office Word 2003 to create documents:

a. Changing margins and paper size.

b. Formatting texts

c. Inserting objects in a document

d. Saving a new and existing document

e. Retrieving and existing

f. Printing a document

6. create projects using Print Artist 6.0

 

At the end of the Third Grade course, the students should be able to:

1. demonstrate an understanding of how the computer system functions i.e. the secondary memory of the CPU and the different software

2. observe proper etiquette in using the Internet

3. demonstrate proper computer device operation and familiarity with alphanumeric keys in keyboarding

4. create different projects using MS Office Publisher 2004

5. create documents using MS Office Word 2003

 

At the end of the Fourth grade course, the students should be able to:

1. Identify the main and secondary memory of the CPU and explain how they function

2. Enumerate the different types of software and classify a given software according to its type

3. Be familiar with the different types of computers and their use.

4. demonstrate proper computer device operation and certain degree of mastery in the use of the keyboard.

5. Create presentations using MS Office PowerPoint 2003

6. Create documents using MS Office Word 2003 employing such features as creating and inserting tables, document merging, importing files from other MS applications.

7. Create basic diagrams and charts using MS Office Visio 2003

 

At the end of Fifth Grade, the students should be able to:

1. Explain how the computer system works Identify the internal parts of the Central Processing Unit: power supply, motherboard, processor, memory

2. Explain the operating system's function in the computer system.

3. Describe how computers are connected in a local area network.

4. Observe proper etiquette in using the Internet

5. Demonstrate proper computer device operation and mastery in the use of the keyboard.

6. Create, format, and edit worksheets and charts using MS Office Excel 2003

7. Create a presentation using Moviemaker by performing the following skills:

a. Capturing video from a camera

b. Building a storyboard and editing clips

c. Adding effects, transitions, titles, subtitles or credits

d. Adding audio and narration

e. Saving the created movie

8. Create database using MS Office Access 2003 by performing the following skills:

a. Creating table in different ways for different data types

b. Creating and formatting database

9. Use Visio program to create flowcharts

 

At the end of the Sixth Grade, the student should be able to:

1. Explain the operating system's function in the computer.

2. Identify the parts of the motherboard

3. Explain how files are protected and shared in LAN; Identify the levels of security and its importance

4. Create simple web pages using HTML by:

a. using basic HTML tags to create web pages

b. adding images and sounds in a web page

c. creating a hyperlink on web page

d. using image as a link

5. Create web pages using FrontPage by:

a. entering and editing texts

b. Inserting clipart and images

c. Adding borders and hyperlink to
